Republicans, 2008
Bloomberg previews Romney's speech today by noting how Romney "initially cast himself as a traditional-values Republican," but is now "styling himself as the heir to President Ronald Reagan's legacy of tax cuts... He is weighing a cut in the top individual tax rate from the current 35 percent; a reduction in the corporate income tax; and deep cuts in automatic-benefit programs such as Medicare and Social Security."
Following his announcement speech in Michigan on February 13, Romney will visit Iowa, South Carolina, and New Hampshire over a three-day period before returning to Boston. "Romney's decision to hold the campaign kickoff event in Michigan sends a clear signal of how important he believes his native state will be to his 2008 efforts."
The Detroit Free Press notes that "Romney had just 8% of the support among people who expect to vote in next year's Republican presidential primary, according to a recent The Detroit Free Press-Local 4 Michigan Poll."
Rudy Giuliani has gained ground on Sen. John McCain in a new poll of New Hampshire Republicans. “McCain was favored by 28 percent and Giuliani 27 in the CNN/WMUR poll of likely primary voters that was conducted until Monday - before Giuliani announced he was in the race. Last September, McCain led Giuliani, 32-19.”
The New York Times points out that despite filing his statement of candidacy, Giuliani remains an undeclared candidate. “A few skeptics have wondered whether Mr. Giuliani, who has been crisscrossing the country over the last few months and signaled his interest in the presidency again and again, may ultimately back out - as he did in 2000, when he contemplated a race for the Senate but withdrew.”
If he does get in, however, the New York Daily News writes that the pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights Giuliani could benefit from efforts by California, Florida, Illinois, and New Jersey to move up their primaries.
He has been invited to give the commencement address to the Citadel's graduating class on May 5.
The Chicago Tribune notes that Giuliani’s speaking fees -- and lavish travel -- could receive scrutiny if he officially gets into the race. “He commands $100,000 for a speech, not including expenses... In one speech last year at Oklahoma State University, Giuliani requested and received travel on a private Gulfstream jet that cost the school $47,000 to operate. His visit essentially wiped out the student speakers annual fund.”

Wonder if Mitt and Rudy agree on that dual spouse thing? And I wonder how each will play out in the Bible Belt of the south - this could be lots of fun, can't wait for '08.

I wouldn't give him a $1.69 to speak. Instead of "Let them Eat Cake" Giuliani should be known as Mr. Let-them-see-Connecticut

take medical care away from the poor and middle class, raise taxes on poor and middle class(if ya cut taxes for rich obviosly poor and middle class pay more) these are the repubs plan to run for president on.

All Mitt needs to do now is pick out a country to "free" and he will be a re-incarnation of George Dubya, I urge all democrats in crossover states to vote for him. If he gets the nomination I think I could beat him.
Rufus Gibbons, Kennett, Mo. (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 11:24 AM)
Who was it around here that deplored the attacks on the rich? Is anyone bothered by the relentless attacks of the rich on the middle class and poor? The right has been waging class warfare since Reagan.
just wondering (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 11:24 AM)
Those people at Oklahoma State University must have more money than brains! Heck, I could go to OSU and tell them a bunch of BS for a whole lot less than $147,000.
Seattle Sue (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 11:50 AM)
Heir to Ronald Reagan! Doesn't anybody realize that he was Altheimzer's riddled idiot who thought he was in an eight year movie. Let's see, cut the tax rate for the wealthly, more tax cuts for business so eventually Exxon Mobil won't owe anyhting and balance it out with cuts in Medicare and Social Security. So the people who don't need it, get it and the people who really need it get screwed. Typical Repubican agenda. Middle class, put you head between your knees and kiss your ass good by. Why are these morons elected in the first place?

Dave, Ronald Reagan? Isn't he the host of the TV show, "Death Valley Days"?
Still Crazy After All These Years (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 12:51 PM)
Dave - I respect the fact that you have a right to express your opinion I just wish that you would show more respect for a former President. Yes, he cut taxes for the "wealthy", whatever that means, he also presided over the second best and longest economic growth period in our history. Second only to the technology driven go-go 90's under Clinton. I can't be sure about your claim that Exxon Mobil will eventually owe nothing. If that was truely Reagan's goal it got seriously derailed along the way since XOM paid almost $100 billion in taxes last year or 26.6% of total revenue. Reagan with the help of Tip O'Neil helped temporarily save social security. I of course wish that he would've just privatized it so someday I could actually see some of the money that I am currently pouring into a broken system that should've never been established in the first place. I would guess that the reason "these morons" get elected is that many people in this country believe in less government interference with their lives. Now, the current administration has left some to be desired in that category but, Reagan, who you rhetorically maimed in your opening sentece, believed in smaller government and that people can make decisions for themselves and they don't need the government making decisions for them.
Ryan, Michigan (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 1:03 PM)
Mitt was against abortion, then he was for abortion, now he is against abortion. Does that make him more unsure of his stance on abortion than Kerry was about his vote on the war?(I voted for the war before I voted against the war) Then policians wonder why the public has such a low opinion of them. Duh

Trickle-down reganomics is not what we need from ANY politician. (we didn't even need it in the 80's)
MM (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 2:18 PM)
Ryan, that's all great except that the same people who believe that government should not play a large role in our daily lives also seem to believe that:
women should not have a right to choose, that poeple should be told who the can and cannot marry, what language can or cannot be spoken, who we can or cannot hire, etc. The problem with libertarianism is that it's in the eye of the beholder.
skeptical (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 2:27 PM)
I second that, Ryan. As far as I am concerned, anyone living is fair game but it's pretty tactless and disrespectful to insult the dead.
Carrie, NW Iowa (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 2:31 PM)
Ryan, I give respect to former presidents who deserve and Ronnie ain't one of them. His tax cuts produced the largest deficit in our history which Clinton cleared up after raising taxes plus a great economic expansion. The economic expansion was based on debt, like junk bonds and no real wealth was created. That vapor locked in October 1987. Then we have the S&L scandal which we are still paying to the tune of $1 trillion dollars which involved such illustrious people as John McCain and Neil Bush, George's bro (whatever happened to him? Right, he has a company selling software to the government). Then we have Iran Contra where we were selling guns and missles to the Iranians to free hostages (Reagan said he would never negotiate for hostages) and the money was used fund the Contras, who were the army of the deposed dictator Anatasio Somoza trying to over throw a duly elected government. Ollie North ran that, Reagan didn't remember anything and VP Bush the First claimed he was out of the loop.I believe that some of those armaments killed our soliders. Sounds like the definition of treason to me. As for privatizing Social Security, the only real winners will be the brokerage houses that manage the accounts. I also see alot of funny business with that as unsophisticated investors are going to be fleeced on "get rich quick schemes." Those Wall Street bonuses for last year didn't materialize out of thin air. You want to save Social Security, pull the tax cap off earnings. Anybody making $97,000 or under always pays. The chairman of XOM pays for a week at best. FDR with Social Security and other New Deal programs saved capitalism in the 1930's. It was necessary then and we have a social contract now. Finally, remember ketchup as a veggie for school lunches? History cetainly clears things up now doesn't it?
Dave, Sun City, AZ (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 2:46 PM)
Carrie, if they are part of the government, it is called history. We all need to read our own history.Just the facts man, just the facts.

The worldwide child porn bust is wreaking havoc in DC. I wish some good photographer would record a bunch of mug shots of Republican politicians and preachers nation wide at the sudden stunner of getting their sex lives blown to hell and Oklahoma. It should play really well on U-Tube. I guess that means a lot of senators and reps will be hi-tailing it to Costa Rica, Bangladesh and various other ports of pleasure around the globe where a twelve year old girl friend is semi-legal. I don't know why this has to happen right now, when it is very important to keep these upstanding statesmen home plying their three day work week representing the people the way they were hired to do.
JIrby, Colorado Springs, Co (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 3:22 PM)
Carrie,
While I respect your concurrence with Ryan, the dead are fair game also. Otherwise, we would not have books on history and biographies. Not to be cynical, but under your argument, All we could say about Hitler is that his military build up during the 1930s saved the German economy that was in a death spiral in the 1920s under the Weimar Republic with rapid inflation. Anything after 9/1/39 is not fair game.
I apologize that I have strong opinions about Reagan, but will not apologize for voicing them.
Dave, Sun City, AZ (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 3:24 PM)
skeptical - I assume that you are alluding to social conservatives that are also fiscal conservatives. Social conservatives believe that abortion in essentially murder therefore should be outlawed just as murder is outlawed. Its not that they are advocating government control of our lives they just have a different view as to when life begins. As far as marriage goes, social conservatives would argue that government does not have the right to redefine marriage, and if we give them that right what will they redefine next. Social conservatives would probably argue that you can speak whatever language you want as long as you assimilate into America and learn English just like is "required" in most other nations. Finally, I believe that most social conservatives would agree that government should not influence who private companies hire (i.e. affirmative action).
Ryan, Michigan (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 3:36 PM)
Enough with this 'respect for the president' crap. Dead or alive. A president is nothing more than a political hack who has clawed his way to the top. Respect is earned. And it has been a long time since any president has deserved the respect of the country. Republicans fall over themselves claiming to be a 'Reagan Republican'. What does that mean? That they, too, will bust a union as soon as they are in office? That they will turn their heads away from illness, poverty, and injustice? That they will wheel and deal with terrorists?
Pete Caloger Bushkill, PA 18324 (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 3:46 PM)
Ryan==Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure you will. But after twelve years of Reagan and Bush(41) 1980/1992 wasn't our deficit about 12 billion dollars? Eight years later,2000 Clinton presented Bush(43) with a surplus. Six years later according to U.S. National Debt Clock(google) at 02/07/2007 08:46;37 debt=$8,699,214,897,948.55 Each citizen share=$28910.23 In my book this one HECK of a lot of debt.
Seattle Sue (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 3:55 PM)
Reagan also put a tax on social security and stopped the cost of living increases for military and civil service retirees. I am reminded of these two little items on a regular basis because they cost me approximately $150 per month. I call it the reagan tax.

As far as the discussion about Reagan got elected, well, let's face it, things were not going well under Carter. Inflation had heated up as far back as when Ford was President. Those of us old enough can remember Ford wore a WIN (Whip Inflation Now) button during a State of the Union Address. By the time Carter left office, the so called "misery index" (the inflation rate plus the unemployment rate) went above 20%. Think high gas prices are bad, just remember when we had gas lines and one could wait hours to get a tank full. Then there was the disaster with the Iranian Embassey and the hostages. Reagan didn't have to resort to dirty tricks. Reagan didn't have to run a negative campaign. He was elected because the country wanted a change. Ryan and I have discussed our contrasting thoughts on Reagan and Clinton previously so I won't repeat that here. But even as a partisan Democrat who lived through that time, I can easily understand how and why Ronald Reagan was elected as President.
rick (Sent Wednesday, February 07, 2007 6:01 PM)
Dave, Sun City-Rufus Gibbons-Peter Caloger, Thanks for reminding me of all the things about Ronnie Reagan that made me think that he was not the Great President the GOP thinks he is.

Dave - It is one thing to have a negative opinion of someone and voice that. It is far different, as far as I'm concerned, to call someone an Alzheimer's riddled idiot. If you want to be critical of him, focus on his policies. It's hardly his fault he suffered from a horrible disease, is it?
