With satphones its different, its more of a ritual. Much like the first wind-up phones were in the late 19th century but only slightly worse.Finding a good spotSky is good. You need lots of sky, depending on the type of satphone you might only need a few square inches but more sky is good. There could be loads of sky, yet your view of the satellite might still be blocked. You also need a bit of space, because your buddy or your butler will have to pedal a stationary bike while you talk on the phone. Avoid places with cows, tourists and small children as they will come up to you and ask you what the hell you are doing. A modern low-end satellite phone without antennaGetting ready to place a callFirst you have to connect the satellite phone to the stationary bike, at this point your butler can sit on it but no need to pedal yet. You also have to pull out the antenna - these usually come in 5 to 10 different cross sections and have to be connected in the right order. This is like rigging a tent.Getting a good signalOnce you have the antenna connected you can aimlessly wave it around in the general direction of where you think the satellite is. Once you get more than 3 bars hold it exactly like that and proceed to key in the number with area code, country code and some systems require you also enter the planet code. You might have it saved in the phone book, but satellite phones being about 20 years behind ordinary phone technology might only store 2 or 3 numbers.Calling someoneBefore hitting the green button it is important to tell who ever is on the stationary bike to start peddling. When you actually press the button the bike will become very hard to pedal as the phone sucks about 400 watts from the generator on the bike, more if the signal is bad. For a long time you will hear nothing but faint random noises from the phone. Not even a ring. When you hear the ring make sure its clear by slowly moving the antenna around until it improves. Don't panic - it will probably drop the call then. Orange cable goes to satellite phoneWhat to do when they answerAgain you can't just go and talk to them. It is difficult to calculate the right time to say "Hello" with the amount of lag involved - if you wait too long they will just hang up, but if you say it too soon you will talk over them or in a strange and unexplainable way they will actually hear you talking to them before they even answer the phone. I usually wait about a second and a half, then hope for the best.Talking to themSo you spent about 20 minutes rigging up your gear to make a call, surely you must have some idea what to say but most people will have forgot. Its good to make a list. Don't ask what the weather is like, after all do you really care what the weather is like? the chances are that the weather will be a lot worse where you're standing. So tell them what the weather is like, and whatever is on your list. The worst thing you could possibly do is say nothing, or let them start babbling on about how they fed the cat and how some distant relation is getting on in hospital. There will be a few seconds delay so only ever ask one question at a time, then wait for a response. Also hold the phone steady. People tend to get relaxed at this point and get a bit carried away. While you are on the phone it is a good idea to look at the person on the bike and shout "MY BATTERY IS DIEING HERE!!!" even if it isn't. Without peddling the hydrogen fuel cell or miniature gas turbine in the satellite phone might last ten or twelve seconds depending on your signal before it runs out of juice.Hanging upWhen you are sick of paying about Ђ7 to talk to who ever you are talking to them move your finger over the red button and tell them you have to go. The tone of voice you use to say this is very important, you have to sound shocked as if a bull is about to charge into you. That way they won't mind hanging up so much.As soon as you press the button tell the person on the bike who must be exhausted by now to keep peddling for a while. This will charge up the battery or fuel cell for when someone calls you.You can then start to pack up the antenna, cables and the stationary bike and move along to do whatever you were doing before you decided you had to call someone.rPhone - the most advanced satellite phone in the worldReceiving a callSometime during your journey you might notice a rather soft beep coming from the bottom of your 35kg backpack. At this point you rush to higher ground and assemble the antenna. The person calling you will have been told it could take up to ten minutes for you to answer in an automated message so its not necessary to rush too much. You should hear the beep every 10 seconds while they are calling even when no antenna is connected. You won't even be able to see who is calling until you have a good signal and even then it is good to wait a few seconds before pressing the green button. The phone will start to actually ring. This is really stupid because you are after getting the signal and are most likely holding the thing in your hand. When its at the bottom of your bag it only makes a very soft beep.The person on the bike should already be peddling now even though your phone might last a few seconds on battery power it's not worth the risk of losing the call. Treat the person calling you with utmost rizpekt. After all they are paying around Ђ25 a minute to call you and you don't want to piss them off or do something stupid that might break the connection. Don't try to keep them on the phone and ask them unimportant stuff as their months wages are being sucked up in a matter of minutes while they are talking to you and telling you your freakin' cat is still around. These reviews are of inferior quality but they will do. The people who buy them probably have better things to worry about than writing a review about the thing. I might actually get the SG-2520 someday but it is a bit expensive now. They have some deal now that you can call in Europe for 49c but it does GSM too so you can use any SIM. The 2520 is a nice phone, even compared to regular mobiles. Its Windows CE based but not the horrible Windows mobile that they install on cheap Asian PDAsThey are supposed to be launching a new satellite on October 15th but this has been delayed a few times already. To make things even worse they only transmit a poor quality analogue signal that is shit unless you live in Dublin. These fucks, like most Dubs don't realise there is anything to Ireland besides Dublin. The only way you can get an any way decent quality signal besides moving to Dublin is to pay for everything a second time. Getting Sky Digital (tm) and one of those god awful ugly minidishes and pay for it every month (around Ђ30). So in a way you are paying for it 3 times [licence, Sky digital, and watching the ads]. I can see all 4 Irish channels on the channel listing from the satellite but the bastards put encryption on it so I can't watch it unless I sign up with Sky. The fools signed some little dealio with Sky to be on the satellite but the ads and the license fee money obviously isn't enough for them to just get their own uplink to a satellite and forget Sky. Maybe they just don't want to pay it which is more likely and in the mean time they are recruiting new staff to do administration work that doesn't exist. It uses a network of 29 Low earth orbit satellites (more planned for launch this year) to relay emails. For $59.99 you can send 30,000 characters a month. One site claims to be still selling them for $985 but other than that it's so rare eBay doesn't even have them. It should be still possible to buy a developer module from Orbcomm and make your email device but that is a lot of work. And the GSC 100 has a GPS too, so you can't knock it. Not for the low price of $985The Orbcomm network doesn't use TCP so you have to use their service, and it tends to hold on to messages for a few minutes. It is used mostly for tracking devices and remote telemetry and other boring stuff.
